Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority department of Ecology spearheaded a motorcade from Subic Bay Freeport Zone Waterfront Road to Pastolan as the opening activity. More than 800 participants gathered and showed their support for this endeavor.
The International Coastal Cleanup Zambales (ICCZ) with co-partner Engr. Eric Raymundo held a sustainability program at Sampaloc Cove to share knowledge and educate the community on how they can protect their own environment, the only source of their livelihood.
The highlight of the program was about Sustainable Bamboo Harvesting and Chemical Free Preservation. Engr. Raymundo discussed about Bamboo Grass and Bamboo Clump Management and Rehabilitation as bamboo grass is one of the source of livelihood of the tribe living in the area of Sampaloc Cove. Furthermore, part of the ICCZ and Lighthouse Marina Resort Legacy Foundation’s (LMRLF) commitment to social responsibility is to provide awareness on how a community can sustain a healthier environment, thus gain more profit from their resources. The organization also gave tips on upcycling materials that can be useful for them. In addition, they provided a griller, made of metal frames and some upcycled materials that can be rented by tourists visiting for picnics. Pastor Mau Rivera and Mrs. Shirley Tan gave some encouragements through prayers and parables in order to uplift the tribe’s motivation to take good care of Mother Nature, the only foundation of our life system. 1. You skip the straws at restaurants Plastic doesn’t biodegrade, it photo-degrades, which means the material breaks into tiny little toxic pieces and every piece of plastic that has been made still exists in some shape or form. Marine animals nibble on these, thinking they’re food. Source: http://simplystraws.com/bpa/ If 25,000 people pledge to skip the straw at restaurants each time they dine, we can keep five million plastic straws out of our ocean and landfills in just one year. 2. You bring your own water bottle during trips. Studies have found that it takes a plastic water bottle nearly 450 years to dissolve at sea and it takes one plastic bottle up to 1,000 years to degrade in a landfill. You keep your candy wrappers or any plastic wrapper in your pocket until you can dispose them properly Plastic debris cause over 100,000 sea turtles and other marine animal deaths every year when animals mistake them for food. You prefer to do an E-load than purchase a prepaid card. 324 liters of water is used to make 1 kilogram of paper, 93% of paper comes from trees and Every tree produces enough oxygen for 3 people to breathe. Our decisions are all connected! Source: http://www.theworldcounts.com/stories/Paper-Waste-Facts 5. You volunteer in river and beach cleanups
While beach cleanups alone can’t solve the ocean trash problem, having allies like you, helping us in the fight against marine debris, plays an integral piece to the overall solution. It may seem like an impossible task but as long as there are people willing to make a change, there will always be a chance for a better tomorrow. We invite you to save the date for this year’s ICC and continue the battle for trash-free seas: September 19, 2015. |
