The Lighthouse Marina Resort Legacy Foundation (LMRLF) celebrated Earth Hour last March 28, 2015 with their environmental partners, advocates and members of the community, by going beyond the hour. A culmination of activities were presented to supporters as they convened for the noble occasion at the beachfront of The Lighthouse, located in Subic Bay.
“Videos have always been our tool to convey a message and we hope to spark an empowerment for others to use their strengths in making a positive impact for the environment,” explained Zedrik Avecilla, Director of LMRLF and International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians (IYFR) member. He added, “All things considered it can be said that the tourism is a double edged sword. Recognizing these threats is a start. Our objective is to be able to share to everyone our advocacy and hopefully inspire people to join us take action in preserving our environment as we all explore its beauty.” A documentary was premiered which highlighted a small fishing community approximately ten kilometers away from The Lighthouse, by boat. For the past years, LMRLF has been advocating the preservation of this area and promoting a cleaner and more sustainable tourism. Tourism encompasses many different areas. It creates different levels of employment. It is a great way to learn more and improve knowledge about the culture of other countries and nations. On the other hand tourism also has its share of negative effects such as social and economic problems. And of course, one of the biggest problem, is the pollution contributed by the industry.
The Sampaloc Cove expedition (www.vimeo.com/wondertower/earthhour2015) last March 18, 2015, was part of the Earth Hour Campaign of going beyond the hour. It shows how anyone can do their part in helping our community. It encourage us to take a step back from our busy lives to meet new friends and discover new places at the same time see how we can all come together and make the lives of the people around us better.
The primary means of communication in Sampaloc Cove is through mobile phones. Electricity and road access are not available in this area, the people here had to walk for hours or ride a boat just to be able to charge their mobile phones. They’re hopeful that with the new mobile solar panel that was donated by the group, they will somehow improve the lives of this small community and now they will be able to charge their mobile phones and power an AM/FM radio. During the evening of the Earth Hour last March 28, we joined millions of people around the world as we all turned off our lights for one hour to support the campaign. Our list of activities included a Leave No Trace Workshop conducted by Lito Deveterbo of (www.misterlnt.ph), a simultaneous Tree Planting event in Cavite, hosted by PTT Philippines Corporation, and performance by APOLAKI a group of dynamic and young environmental warriors. The event were participated by The BMW Club of the Philippines together with PLDT SME group. The BMW Car Club of the Philippines has also donated Php50,000 to WorldWide Fund and fully supported the cause with their members.
