Participants warmly welcomed the honorable guest speaker Secretary Neric O. Acosta, Presidential Adviser on Environmental Protection, where he gave an inspiring and challenging talk entitled, “Climate Change - How to turn problems into opportunities”. He discussed the status of our environment and emphasized the importance of caring for the planet. “Ecology is the basis of economy, not the other way around,” explained Secretary Acosta. At the end of the event, Vice Gov. Lacbain announced the launching of International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) on September 20, 2014 for Zambales, spearheaded by ICC Zone Captain and the Sales & Marketing Manager of The Lighthouse Marina Resort, Zedrik Avecilla. Last year's ICC was attended by over 26,000 participants from Zambales, Olongapo and Subic Bay combined. This year, more volunteers are expected to be mobilized from all towns to help clean the coastlines and waterways of Zambales. Moreover, during the activity, Hon. Lacbain together with Secretary Acosta and Mr. Avecilla decided to have a bigger and more meaningful dialogue that will involve the entire LGU of Zambales including Olongapo City and Subic Bay Freeport Zone together with business owners to discuss the current problems of the environment at the same time solutions on how to tackle them. This will be held sometime in September before the ICC on September 20 at Subic Bay Freeport Zone. This will be a joint project of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, the Provincial Government of Zambales and the Municipal Government of Olongapo. View full story and photos here

The Lighthouse Marina Resort, Harbor Point Mall and the Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailing (SAGS) organized the official premier of the regatta documentary, entitled, "Subic Sailing" last Independence Day, June 12 at the Ayala Harbor Point Cinema.
The “Subic Sailing” (a Wondertower Film) documentary features founding members of the Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailing (SAGS) and other distinguished pillars in the sailing scene who have helped establish yacht racing in the country. As sailors, they value the biodiversity of marine life and promote environment protection. The sailing community supports a movement for change and the International Coastal Cleanup on September 20, 2014. View full album here. Kiko Rustia is known for hosting “Born to Be Wild” with Dr. Ferds Recio. He has currently ventured into producing and hosting his own show titled “Dis Is Pinas”, which airs weekly on GMA News TV. This program showcases nature and heritage sites by engaging with the local residents.
In this shoot last June 7, he takes Flying 15 sailing lessons from Marcus Avecilla, Operations Manager of the Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailing (SAGS) and a trimmer for the The Lighthouse Marina Resort Selma Star yacht racing team. One of the notable advocacies of SAGS aside from organizing and helping in the staging of the two major sailing events in Subic is the promotion of sailing through proper education and sail training through its outreach IYFR-SAGS School. Being an advocate for the environment, Kiko stresses the importance of protecting the waters of Subic Bay and even attended the SAGS “Subic Sailing” Documentary that premiered in the Ayala Harbor Point Cinema during Independence Day, last June 12, 2014. He also pledged his support for the the largest volunteer effort in preserving our ocean: The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) on September 20, 2014. By joining this event, volunteers will be supporting the work of Ocean Conservancy.org to use the best in science-based solutions to tackle challenges like ocean trash. The ICC is celebrated every 3rd Saturday of September and joined by 650,000 people across the globe. In fact, the Philippines is the second largest participating country in the world with 182, 408 volunteers in 2013. After a trip to Anawangin and the famous Capones Island in Pundaquit, she headed back to The Lighthouse Marina Resort where Chef Mario Afable served her a refreshing lunch with table side cooking. Afterwards, we gave her a tour of the hotel and gave her a brief description of our CSR programs such as Operation H.O.P.E. and the International Coastal Cleanup that is held every Saturday of September in 92 countries and locations in over 5,500 sites. Our team from Lighthouse Marina Resort Legacy Foundation are working towards a long-term rehabilitation and rebuilding program called “Operation: H.O.P.E. (Helping Others Progress & Excel)". This project aims to put up a resettlement area here in Zambales in order to help climate refugees find a better place to recover from their traumatic experience (please refer to photos below). We have already coordinated with Zambales LGU through Vice Governor Ramon Lacbain and the Social Action Center headed by Father John Mara of Sta. Rita Parish to find a site for this resettlement area. The objective is not just for an initial relief but rehabilitation that involves several components for a vital support system which includes:
The livelihood program can work with the current booming tourism industry in the region by being able to supply resources such as food and raw materials. Furthermore, it can also serve as a sustainable and eco-friendly community which also invite volunteerism/voluntourism. The Department of Tourism said that the outpouring of support shows that travel and tourism have transformed the globe into one community, ready to stand by each other not only in times of festivities, but in times of challenges. Tourism continues to be one of the major contributors to the economy, playing a significant role in rebuilding lives and business in communities. Lastly, this program will be a study that can help us better prepare in these types of calamities. As long as the problem with our environment exists, this natural disaster will just keep getting worse. We can take preventive measures by educating our fellow countrymen of the impact that pollution brings to our habitat. Father John Mara shares the same vision and has committed their involvement for the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) on September 20, 2014. The Social Action of Zambales will serve as one of the information channels and point leads in their organization with this environmental event. Photos from the resettlement area ocular last May 19 |
