During the last weeks of May, the Lighthouse Marina Resort Legacy Foundation and International Coastal Cleanup Zambales team leaders, Zedrik Avecilla and Jozen Curva witnessed the spectacular aquatic life in the outskirts of Sampaloc Cove and Grande Island in Subic Bay, Zambales. They took SCUBA diving classes, instructed by Rene Guevara of NAUI Worldwide, to have a total immersion with the nature from a different perspective. Most importantly, it also serves as one of the ways to express a commitment to learn more about the sea in order to target the main goals of the ICC campaign. The mere experience of drawing oneself into the depth of the ocean is both exhilarating and liberating. The underwater world houses a number of species, such as the coral reefs and various kinds of marine life that is vital to our eco system. That’s one of the reasons why people are possibly drawn to the undeniable beauty of the ocean deep. It is indeed true to say that ‘what you see often is only a fractional part of what it really is, according to the team. It was a whole new experience to them because what humans mostly see in the surface is different from what’s underneath. It is also humbling to realize that we are the ones responsible of protecting and preserving the beauty of our own planet, our only home. Get to know more about their upcoming events in the succeeding days to come. If you’re interested in also becoming a “SCUBAsurero”, please email [email protected]. Furthermore, the International Coastal Cleanup Zambales extends their gratitude to Brent International School for supporting the ICC Campaign by allowing the team to use their pool for the SCUBA training. Special thanks to their personnel, Mr. Steve Davis and Mr. Jeff Mayrose.

The city of Olongapo last May 15, 2015 launched the “I Support Riverth Gapo”, a campaign that aims to unite the townspeople in rehabilitating the river for a more sustainable environment. Hence, the underlying theme and objective stems from, “Rebirth of Olongapo River”. To launch the campaign, an Eco Walk (from Marikit Park to Volunteer’s Park) was spearheaded by the Events Guild – Olongapo (EGO). This was participated by Hon. Rolen Paulino, SBMA Director Mrs. Cynthia Paulino, 17 Barangay Captains of Olongapo City, various government departments, private sectors, individuals, and even some Columban College students joined this activity. The event also paved way to unveil the donation box needed to raise funds for the completion of the project. The Lighthouse Marina Resort Legacy Foundation (LMRLF) team, including its director Zedrik Avecilla and project manager, Jozen Curva were also present to support the campaign. “Start in the small things to do bigger things. . . Everyone can make a change,” Ms. Jozen Curva, ICC Project Manager said in a speech during the launching of the campaign.
There were also festivities and programs during the whole weekend of May 16-17, that encouraged the community to interact through music, videos, exercise and goods from local business stands. The ICCZ is in full support of “I Support Riverth Gapo” in lieu of their same objective to unite everyone in cleaning up the waterways, rivers and coastal areas of Subic, Zambales and several nearby coastal provinces. The Lighthouse Marina Resort Legacy Foundation and International Coastal Cleanup Zambales support projects that share a common goal in finding ways to help solve problems concerning ocean trash.
The group organized a trip to Sampaloc Cove, slated last May 18 and 22, where they toured participants and provided activities to reconnect with nature. Their itinerary included swimming in the waterfalls, a refreshing yoga session with instructor and renowned surfer Cory Wills, and a chance for them to cultivate their appreciation for their surroundings. Among the attendees was Engr. Eric Raymundo, (one of the partners of ICCZ), and he was able to share his tips to the tribe living in the area, on how to avoid health problems caused by smoking and burning plastics. Their day was capped off by trailer presentation of the film to their audience who has the same vision for a more sustainable environment. Water Under My Feet, (directed by Martin Rey Aviles and produced by Tamara Benitez-Aviles and Zedrick Avecilla), is a film about ‘exploration of what four shapers and four surfers can do together to make a radical statement about their love for surfing and the environment’. It will give an insider’s perspective on the craft of shaping, spew adventures of surfers, and hopefully spark more aspiring surfers in the Philippines. Club officers coming from different clubs in RI District 3790 gathered for the 2015 District Training Assembly (DISTAS) at Venus Parkview Hotel in Baguio City hosted by the Rotary Club of Baguio Summer Capital. The assembly had the purpose of keeping Rotarians in line with the objectives for the upcoming Rotary year themed, “Be a gift to the world.” The Lighthouse Marina Resort Legacy Foundation (LMRLF) team, including its director Zedrik Avecilla and project manager, Jozen Curva, (Rotary Club of Subic Bay members) were given the opportunity to present in front of 500 attendees, spanning different regions to speak about their club's endeavors that encompasses environmental efforts through the ICC campaign. What they’ve contributed as a whole organization, and in their own small ways, can indeed be a gift to the world. There is always a ripple effect.
