The 111th Auxiliary Squadron CGAD NCR-CL of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA), headed by Captain Randy Escolango PCGA, is based inside Subic Bay Freeport Zone. It covers Zambales Region under the CGADNCR-CL district, one of the 12 districts of PCG-PCGA which includes NCR and Central Luzon. This squadron has been working with the Lighthouse Marina Resort on several environmental projects including coastal cleanups, environmental summits, waste management workshops, reef restoration, and underwater cleanups. Promotion of safety of life and property at sea, in the protection of the marine environment and its resources is one of the mandate of the PCGA. MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT Last April 20, members of the squadron launched a marine environmental project aimed at creating an underwater rainforest to save threatened aquatic life. Dubbed as "Build a Reef Project," the PCGA's marine conservation efforts are now underway as layers of concrete blocks were submerged some 100 meters from the shoreline of the ACEA Beach Resort (formerly known as Dungaree Beach) inside this free port. EARTH DAY Two days later, in celebration of Earth Day last April 22, the last blocks to complete the six (6) reef units or also known as “Fish Condos” were put to place. The event was participated by no less than the National Director ADM Valentin Prieto PCGA. He is also the person who started this mandatory project several years back. Now taking the helm as National Director, ADM Prieto continues to expand his campaign across the country through all its districts. By 0600 several members of the 111th Auxiliary Squadron and other invited PCGA members from other squadrons started the briefing headed by RADM Gerry Reyes together with LCDR Johnny Co. SUCCESS OF ICC ZAMBALES RADM Gerry Reyes, Deputy National Director for Administration, is also the founder of the International Coastal Philippines. He recognizes the effort of the ICC Zambales group for being the most successful ICC Campaign to date with volunteers increased a hundredfold in seven years from 800 in 2009 to almost 90,000 in 2015. "It serves as a remarkable model for other areas in the Philippines not just in organizing coastal cleanups but also in the aspects of waste reduction and environmental preservation,” said RADM Reyes. The ICC Zambales, headed by Zed Avecilla, Director of the Lighthouse Marina Resort Legacy Foundation and also a Lieutenant Commander of the 111th Auxiliary Squadron, has evolved into a campaign to change people’s behaviour that causes pollution. “Our goal is to increase the level of awareness through education and information dissemination; and through the support of the PCGA and its network of volunteers, we are able to achieve this goal across the country” said LCDR Avecilla. ABOUT PCGA The PCGA is a service-oriented, uniformed, voluntary organization. It is non-government, non-political organization whose membership adhere to the Philippine Coast Guard's (PCG) customs and traditions. Its organizational structure is parallel to PCG and has its own chain of leadership and management. Its primary functions include providing support and assistance to PCG in the promotion of safety of life and property at sea, the preservation of the marine environment and its resources, the conduct of maritime search and rescue, the maintenance of aids to navigation, recreational safety and such other activities that enhance maritime community relations which include civic action, participation under the National Service Training Program, youth development, and other related activities. covered under Section 11 of Republic Act Number 9993, otherwise known as the PCG Law of 2009. Membership in the PCGA shall be on a voluntary basis and is open to citizens of the Philippines (18 years or older). It is also open to retired military personnel.
