“Last August 7, 2012, Olongapo City suffered from a flood brought about by the Habagat. This is a result of pollution in our waterways. We have to act now!” explained by David Bayarong, marketing officer of The Lighthouse Marina Resort and one of the organizers of the coastal cleanup.
All year long, organizations and individuals take part in Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup to remove trash and debris from the world’s beaches and waterways. Post-event PR. The Lighthouse Marina Resort, in cooperation with Ocean Conservancy, ICC Philippines, Subic “Shore It Up!”, and in partnership with Metro Pacific Investments Corp. Citizens and officials from several towns in Zambales, namely Sta. Cruz, Masinloc, Iba, Subic Town, and Pundaquit in San Antonio, synchronized with Barangays from Olongapo City, specifically Mabayuan and Kalaklan, where various Rotary Clubs like the Rotary Club of Subic Bay, Rotary Club of Downtown Olongapo, Rotary Club of Subic, Rotary Club of Iba, Rotary Club of Masinloc, Rotary Club of Sta. Cruz, Rotary Club of Olongapo Centennial, Rotary Club of Cubao West, International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians, and JCI Olongapo, helped organize and simultaneously undertook a cleanup in their respective waterways and beaches. |

Mr. Jun Avecilla, the ICC Site Coordinator for Zambales and the International Rear Commodore of the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians (IYFR), explained that when they started this massive movement 3 years ago, there were only 600 volunteers, but it grew significantly year after year. “This year, we estimated over 13,000 volunteers from Ocean Adventure to Camayan Beach, from Subic Bay Boardwalk to The Lighthouse, extending all the way to Sta. Cruz.” Amidst the rain, people of all ages, especially students, were all happy to gather data and help record the trash collected, he added.
For next year’s cleanup, more help from different organizations, especially the Rotary International with the pledge of Past District Governor Vit Gutierrez, will rally the various rotary clubs in the coastal areas of Western Luzon and extend this massive wave of volunteers in educating more communities and increase awareness.
MPIC invited 100 students from the Junior Environmental Scouts (JES), for a seminar at The Lighthouse Marina Resort. After which, Mr. Bert Guevarra, the President of Earth Day Network held a Waste Management Seminar. The ICC Zambales co-organizers aimed to tap all 17 Barangays in Olongapo with a waste management program. One of the long-term objectives of the committee is to reduce waste, aside from cleaning up the coastal areas and waterways.
On the second day, divers took part in an underwater cleanup at Johan's Beach and Dive Resort in Zambales. It was immediately followed by a seminar about reef enhancement and restoration that was conducted by Mr. Bill McGilton, an underwater consultant and an American aerospace engineer. The seminar was also supported by the Eco-Coral Corporation, an affiliate of Ocean Technology Foundation USA, spearheaded by the president of Eco-Coral, a British engineer who developed the process of making Eco-Corals. They had also utilized a research vessel, uniquely dedicated to further study the reef as one of their ongoing projects focus on expanding the existing reef nursery at Capones Island in Zambales with an additional 1,000 units of Eco-Corals.
What started with 600 participants has now turned to thousands, making the ICC in the Philippines second only to the U.S. Last September 15 and 16 has definitely made an impact and the efforts of humanity have come to show, that a sea change has begun.

Mabayuan Project
One of the most affected areas from the recent Habagat of 2012 was Mabayuan, particularly Grace Pauline Street. In line with this, the team visited the site to see how we can help prevent this from happening again. The ICC organizers also conducted a waste management forum with Bert Guevara, President of Earth Day Network and a former Barangay Captain in Paranaque.
